Bridging Theory and Practice: NDU Integrates USAID Knowledge Management Resources into Curriculum to Enhance Municipal Governance Education
In its ongoing efforts to ensure the sustainability of USAID developed learning resources, the Community Support Program (CSP) successfully transferred its Knowledge Management Portal (KMP) from the CSP website to the Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU) E-library, which now hosts a comprehensive collection of over 200 training modules, reports, tip sheets, and guidelines. The resources cover an array of topics including municipal/NGO governance, leadership, financial management, digital media, and environmental compliance. NDU recently integrated one of the newly transferred resources into an academic course under the “Faculty of Law and Political Science” FLPS. On November 11, 2024, NDU Professor, Dr. Chady Hajal, provided a lecture on “Administrative Decentralization: Concept, Issues, and Law Proposals” as part of the NDU provided “Government and Politics of Lebanon” course. Nineteen undergraduate students from the FLPS participated, diving into Lebanon’s decentralization challenges and exploring law proposals currently under review by the relevant Lebanese Parliamentary Committees. These law proposals provided FLPS students with a nuanced understanding of the practical and legislative complexities of decentralization, and merged academic theory on decentralization with real-world applications. This innovative approach to experiential learning sets a new standard at NDU, further bridging the gap between theory and practice to better prepare the next generation of municipal leaders. “This session gave me a much deeper understanding of how things work in the real world, beyond what we usually learn in class. It has inspired me to seriously think about getting involved in public service and running for municipal elections in the future,” said Melanie Mikhail, student at the “Faculty of Law and Political Science”.
