USAID Assistance Improves Water Access in Akkar

Ayoun, a village in Akkar governorate is home to 1700 persons and acts as the water source for more than 25 surrounding villages through a central pumping station managed by the North Lebanon Water Establishment (NLWE). The financial collapse, the subsequent economic crisis, national electricity shortage, and soaring fuel prices limited NLWE’s affordability to sufficiently run the pumping station and left many homes without an adequate water supply. In response, USAID through the Community Support Program (CSP) assisted the NLWE by establishing a solar energy field to power the station. This included 448 solar panels and complementary construction and electrical works. USAID assistance also upgraded the chlorination room to help NLWE ensure that the distributed water is clean; CSP also trained NLWE on operating and maintaining the solar field and the pumping station. USAID assistance in Ayoun  to benefit more than 77,000 persons in 26 villages. The facility was completed in December 2024 and has tripled the water distributed to each resident from a previous 11 liters per person per day to a current supply of 33 liters per person per day. “This intervention is a vital step in ensuring the sustainability of water availability in Akkar, and for lowering operational costs and supporting the NLWE in continuing to provide a critical resource to underserved communities,” said Mr. Akram Zakaria, NLWE Area Supervisor.
