USAID’s Community Support Program’s Trained Arcenciel Staff Deliver ‘Skilling and Reskilling’ Training to 20 People with Disabilities to Enhance Disability Inclusion in the Labor Market
The ongoing economic crisis in Lebanon plunged 80% of residents into poverty and led to widespread unemployment. The government’s inability to prioritize disability inclusion further places people with disabilities at significant risk of being deprived of their basic rights. In October 2023, the USAID-funded Community Support Program (CSP), in partnership with local NGO Arcenciel, launched an activity, to provide 135 people with disabilities with temporary work opportunities over a three-month period. By June 2024, all 135 people were placed in part-time jobs. Twenty-eight have transitioned to full-time employment. This represents 20% employment rate, compared to a national average of 2.5% among persons with disabilities. To ensure further institutional sustainability, CSP has boosted Arcenciel’s capacity through collaboratively developing a job placement policy for people with disabilities at private sector firms. CSP has also facilitated a ‘Skilling and Reskilling’ training of trainers’ (TOT) program for relevant staff members on job readiness and skill development. On August 28 and September 3, 2024, Arcenciel’s trained staff members delivered the ‘Skilling and Reskilling’ training to 20 people with disabilities who benefited from this initiative to further enhance their skills and labor market knowledge, with the aim of improving their prospects for securing and maintaining employment. “The training was really motivational and helped me reflect on and identify the abilities and skills that I need to enhance my employment opportunities”, said Hawraa Safwan, a benefiting participant.
