USAID – CSP Forest Cleaning Activities To Reduce Fire Risk
A year after the October 2019 wildfires burned as much as 60 percent of the land in villages in the Mount Lebanon Governorate, residents like Akram Khaddaj are still struggling to recover from their losses. Now, they are being paid to improve public safety during the 2020 fire season, thanks to USAID – US Agency for International Development’s Community Support Program and its partner the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative. Akram is one of about 150 temporary workers from the villages of Kfar Matta, Damour, and Mechref whom CSP is paying to prune and trim foliage along roadsides and public land, and pick up and dispose of waste and recyclables in coordination with the USAID-funded Compost Baladi project.
